Connecting with and investing in the local community is what this project is all about. Two artists will be selected to facilitate separate collaborative art mural projects from start to finish. All supplies will be provided. $1,000 will be awarded to each of the chosen artists after the projects are complete.
Introducing Yourself
In early April, selected artists will visit local schools to introduce yourself, share their artwork, and engage with students. Students will interact with you and also share their own creative ideas for the murals.
Two schools are participating, and each artist will be assigned to one school.
Presentations are scheduled for April 9 or April 10, with flexible times available during and after-school hours.
Student Inspired
During your school visit, selected artists will engage with students as they create their own mini-murals on paper, exploring their personal ideas of beauty. All classroom sessions in this project will be led by art educator, Ruth Jatib O’Connor.
Following the visit, artists will have several weeks to develop a mural design inspired by the students’ concepts. Artists will also be responsible for preparing a grid system or another transfer method to outline their mural design at the chosen public location.
If you’re excited about blending student creativity with your own artistic vision, we encourage you to apply!
Preparing The Canvas
In early May, the artwork is translated in outlines to the mural location and color coded, ready for the community painting event.
Executing the Design
Students and members of the community will participate in painting the mural, essentially filling in the lines the artist prepared.
This mural project is part of the grant “Making Tuscaloosa Beautiful: Bridging Literacy and the Power of the Arts” funded by The Alabama State Council on the Arts (ASCA). Facilitated by Art Educator Ruth Jatib O’Connor and Dr. Cheryl Fondren, Executive Director of Success by Six, The United Way of West Alabama.
